Deposit Issues and Complaints (115 reviews)

Deposits for electricity in Ohio can be a hassle and usually range from $100 to $500. Some companies handle them well with lower deposit amounts or lower credit thresholds while others turn you upside down and shake the lunch money out of your pocket. If deposits are causing you issues, you can read deposit related reviews from other customers before you sign up for an energy company.

I did not have a problem with my gas when I had an account. The apartment I was living in had a fire so I had to cancel my service. I was suppose to get my deposit back but for about 2 months they have been telling lie after lie about my deposit the Reps wont let me speak to a supervisor. It's not a lot of money but like they want the monies for their services I want my deposit back. I Rep told me 3 weeks when the 3 weeks came i called back now they tell me it was applied to my account what account? Another told me they sent it to the bank.what bank.i never gave them any bank info. Why is it so hard to get my monies or even get the truth from this company. Hopefully someone will get in touch with me about this matter

May not be the best choice.

For your sanity, do not establish service with Direct Energy if you don't have to. Like myself and the others, we have warned you. The amount of complaints is out of this world, my goodness.

For the past year, I have asked for a due date change. I've only had one issue with a payment, but that's it I didn't update my banking before the due date, and that was my error. Every time I ask for a due date change, they tell me my account isn't eligible for a change. I've been with them for several years and have, NEVER, asked to change my due date. For a year, you've been telling me my account isn't eligible. When speaking to an agent this evening, she said it wasn't eligible because I did not have to pay a deposit. Excuse me, but I can't change the due date because I didn't pay a deposit, one your company did not require. That's something I'm being penalized for? Interesting.

Believe it or not, I like the plan I have, most electricity companies are not offering free weekends I've been shopping plans, lately. My issue is with the additional late fees (again, not able to change the due date) they tag on, a late fee w/ a disconnect fee. Because I haven't been able to change my due date, it's like I'm paying $50 additional, each month. When I pay my original bill without including the late fees, they will show my bill as not being paid in full and will issue a disconnection fee for the late fees.

I feel I'm due a credit, stemming back from my first request to change my due date, to the last request. Credit all additional fees. Per Direct Energy's customer information, even without paying a deposit, the due date can still be changed but that was the reason I was given, for it not being eligible for a change.

At this point, I filed a complaint with the BBB. I have to give them time to respond and resolve this issue, if not, I will file additional complaints with PUCT (Public Utility Commission), AG, and possibly seek legal counsel.

This is crazy!

Will Steal Your Deposit

(2.8 / 5)

I signed up because of the great rate and they promised to return my $150 deposit in six months. Well they didn't. My card was compromised and i changed my card after my due date one month out of six months and they had no exceptions, no empathy. Good luck with that. So i immediately switched to a provider who wasn't charging a deposit.

Infinite Energy is "Not Customer Centric"

(2.8 / 5)

When you first set up account, you are charged a $250 deposit. When they send you a bill, you have only 2 weeks to pay it. Sometimes, based on Reliant's billing to Infinite, you can get billed twice in one month. This can make things hard on a family's monthly budget. However, if you are even 1 day late on payment you get a bad mark on your record that is forwarded to the next company you want to move your service to. So, then you are required to pay another deposit with the new company. The kicker is, they are allowed to keep your remaining deposit for "4 to 6 weeks after your final bill is processed"! So the customer only gets 2 weeks but they can keep your money for 6 weeks, "after they process your final bill". NOT CUSTOMER CENTRIC!

Hi, Pam, we see you also posted on Yelp as well, and we wanted to make sure you saw our response: While our payment period of 16-20 days may seem tight, keep in mind we as the supplier have to pay in advance for the electricity you use, and we only bill you after you've already used it, so that time period is pretty standard for Texas electricity suppliers. We do try to offer ways to make this process a little easier, such as paperless billing, a mobile app and online customer account to help you keep track of your invoice outside of waiting on the paper copy. On the payment side, there's never a fee for credit cards for residential customers, so we've worked to make that convenient as well.

For the deposit, we do wait to make sure an account is completely closed and billed before we issue a final refund, and that can take four to six weeks. That way, you can be sure there won't be any new charges that apply--the deposit is usually just applied to any final charges, so it could get confusing if we sent you a refund and then a bill.

As far as the late payment reporting, that doesn't sound like our process. If there's a particular instance you're concerned about, do you mind sending us your account information and the details so we can look into what happened there?
